The Failing School System
The public school system is failing the
student of today. The sad part of the current school system is that the teachers
do not care about if your child learning. Yes, getting a livable wage is important
but making an impact on the future generation is even more important. There is
a big gap in knowledge between a High School graduate and an Associate degree
alumnus. It is bad enough the funding is going down but the quality teachers who
chose to become a teacher is following. The only thing I can see being the difference
between a college professor and a teacher is the degree the pay and most importantly
the students who want to be there. Controversy with the wage is that the more
the teachers get paid the more knowledge the students get. That is not right.
There are standards in place for the student to know the minimum to pass the class.
In California they took away the CAHSEE (California High School Exit Exam) The
last year this was in effect was in 2014. This test was to check the standards
being met by the students. There is still the SATs in place but that is to
check the level of education of the student to place them into a college or
university. If a student fails to the SATs, they still graduate as long as they
pass their classes. If a student fails, the CAHSEE they would have to retake it
until they pass it. The sad part is the test is no longer in effect and the
student who could not pass it automatically graduates. Who cares if they
standards are being met for that student as long as they get a high school diploma,
correct?
On the first day of High School
the home room teacher said everyone look to your left now look to your right.
One of you are not graduating statistically speaking. Of course, being the class
clown that I was everyone thought I was part of that statistic. Major of the
teachers I had gave me the same type of vibe: why am I wasting my breathe
trying to teach these students when they are just going to drop out or become
pregnant at a young age. That’s the worst part about the public school system
the teachers not caring about the student. The energy they come to school with one
a regular just sucked. My experience they do not do a placement test when you
arrive to a new campus or check your pervious education at the middle school. I
was in algebra and pre-calculus in Middle School. When I went to high school I went
back to Pre-Algebra. I bet the teachers wonder why I stop caring about the
class if I was not even being challenged anymore. No adult wanted to listen to
me or care to put me in the correct class that I deserved. I ended up getting the
highest score in the math section on the CAHSEE out of my entire school that
year. Regardless of the score I was still in a beginner’s algebra class rotting
away.
The amount of money does not change the way a person works. The passion they have for the job is what causes them to preform better. During the pandemic grocery workers were receiving hero pay which was 5 dollars an hour more. Knowing that you would think these employees would work harder. No, they did not. This is the issue with the world. In a college or university setting the educators and staff want to see the student succeed. In high school they could care less and then these students’ become adults with an chip on their shoulders thinking the school system failed me so I am going to continue with life not trying to learn more. Which is making the average reading level in America being a 9th grade level. That’s embarrassing since we are the country trying to innovate the world.
